Read To Me is an artist-run project that showcases visual storytelling. They celebrate the art of Australian graphic storytellers by presenting their work to live audiences. From a library to a theatre, to a scout hall to the stage of a dive bar, Read To Me can turn any venue into intimate places where audiences genuinely feel they are being ‘read to’ one-on-one.

Read to Me is looking for a brand that references their core brand values. The brand needs to work across both physical and digital touch points and merchandise. The brand needs to be flexible enough to adapt to their diverse offering. They want a brand that moves with the same
energy and fun as the stories and participants themselves.

I was tasked with creating an intro sequence, played before Read To Me's events to settle the audience and establish the mood. In order to do so, I had reference the brands core values through first identifying 2 motion principles - being 'Unexpected' and 'Expressive'. Then, I had to create a storyboard for a 15-30s intro sequence reel that showcases the brand motion in its best light. A music track that compliments the brand also needed to be selected.

The motion principle ‘Unexpected’ relates to the spontaneous nature of Read to Me events. Each presenter brings something entirely new to showcase, which is why the motion should also be surprising through utilising playful timing and unconventional movement paths. This captures the sense of discovery and randomness that defies the atmosphere of Read to Me.

The principle related to being expressive speaks to the fundamentals of what Read to Me celebrates: the individual voices that showcase their creative storytelling abilities. Motion will be bold, will be varied, and, most importantly, will be personality-driven in order to reflect the diverse artistic styles of the performers. Through dramatic pacing, characterful animation, and dynamic yet bold typography, the motion of this sequence will embody the self-expressive nature of every Read to Me event.
